Five years ago today, on January 19, 2021, former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo officially declared that the Chinese Communist Party’s policies toward Uyghurs and other Turkic peoples constituted “genocide” and “crimes against humanity.” This marked a historic step toward global recognition of the suffering and persecution faced by the Uyghur people.
Rushan Abbas, the executive director of Campaign for Uyghurs, said on X:
“Five years ago today, the Trump administration and Secretary of State @mikepompeo officially recognized the genocide against the Uyghur people, which led more than a dozen countries and parliaments to determine the genocide. That acknowledgment mattered deeply to Uyghur families who are suffering.
Yet many Uyghurs, like my sister, Dr. Gulshan Abbas, remain imprisoned. Families remain separated. Forced labor, surveillance, and repression continue every day.
Recognition was the beginning, not the end. It ends when countries around the world act with the urgency genocide demands. The time for action is now.”
The East Turkistan National Movement organized a remembrance rally in front of the White House.
The organization said:
“Earlier today, Uyghurs gathered in front of the White House to mark East Turkistan / Uyghur Genocide Recognition & Remembrance Day and the 5th anniversary of U.S. Department of State’s recognition of China’s ongoing genocide. Recognition without accountability has not stopped it—justice, decolonization, and independence are essential to end the genocide.”
